The Next Star Trek Movie? I Sure Hope Not…

You have to be a Star Trek geek to some degree to understand how funny this is… 😉

“Rationalize Like A Pirate” Day

Thankfully, no content-pirate that I know has given me this excuse, but it can’t be that far off given our current cultural climate…

A Funny and Brave Politician? Is There Such a Thing?

ken-gordon-colorado-state-senate.jpg

I don’t think much of most politicians; integrity seems to be a foreign word to most of them. I happened to click on a link in the signature of a Pocket PC Thoughts community member who posted in my thread about WiFi (boy that’s generated some interesting commentary across my network!) and I ended up at the Web site of one of his projects: a Web site for Ken Gordon. I’d just finished the article about my New York trip, so I was rewarding myself with 5 minutes of mindless Web surfing (something I don’t do often). What caught my attention on the Ken Gordon sight was this image:

Could it be? A politician with the stones to get into a tank with sharks? Yup! There’s the official 30 second TV spot showing him in the tank, but the really funny one is the no stuntman used video – I can’t believe how close some of those massive sharks got to him and he never flinched. I don’t care how satiated or “tame” those sharks might be, there’s still a certain level of danger and it’s not something you’d likely find me doing. He further demonstrates his sense of humour in another video spot, and some added bravery by jumping tandem out of a plane.

I don’t live in Colorado, and I definitely lean more toward the right politically, but if I could I’d vote for this guy – if he has the guts to jump out of a plane, be in a tank with sharks, and turn down $100,000 in contributions from special interest groups, he’s got more courage (on multiple levels) than 99% of the politicians out there. I hope he wins his election!

For All My Friends on Facebook

You’ve just gotta love this. 😉 These guys have tighter vocals than most bands out there now! The amusing factor here is that this blog post will be automatically slurped into my Facebook profile. Hah!

What’s the Police Code for a Faulty Cheeseburger?

This has got to be one of the funniest 911 calls I’ve ever heard – apparently this is real and not a spoof (it certainly sounds real). I won’t ruin the fun but watch this video [Internet Explorer only, sorry] – I can’t figure out how the 911 operator could stop herself from laughing during the call. I’m sure she put it on speaker so the whole call centre could hear how ludicrous this woman was acting.

Preparing for Robbery the Japanese Way

Some things are simply too funny to explain – this video says it all.

I don’t know what’s funnier: that someone in Japan felt it prudent to encourage Japanese tourists visiting English-speaking countries to prepare to be robbed, or that they combined it with a work-out video.

Oh, and if you’re a parent toilet-training your child, the Japanese have a solution for you too!

The Importance of Laughter

It’s been a bad week, but laughter helps lift some of the clouds. Here are two videos on YouTube that gave me a good chuckle. The first is Chuck Norris reading some of the funniest (but cleanest) Chuck Norris one-liners.

This next one has a slight language warning, but it’s even funnier – it’s a David Blaine magic spoof, and the guy playing David Blaine is PERFECT because he eyeballs the camera just right.

To All My American Readers…Please Improve Your Economy

That title is tongue-in-cheek, but it underlines a severe problem: as someone who gets paid in US dollars for 95% of the work I do, the rising tide of the Canadian dollar against the US dollars is becoming increasingly painful. I remember getting 40% on the dollar around five years ago – those were awesome days to deposit $1000 USD and end up with $1400 CAD. How bad has it gotten now? I was moving some USD to CAD and this is the conversion rate I got:

4.9 percent different…that’s just sad. Currency fluctuations are always based on more than just one economy – the Canadian economy is booming, and that only makes matters worse. Of course, the credit card companies seem to be immune to this problem, as they always charge an inflated fee – on the same day that the bank gave me a 4.9% difference going from USD to CAD, they charged me a 10% spread for a charge in USD on my credit card. What a bunch of crooks! The company charging the card is already paying a per-transaction fee to VISA, so VISA is getting their money, but they’re skimming more off the top – in this case a little more than double what the exchange rate should be. Why aren’t there laws against this sort of thing?

Only in Calgary…

This is what I woke up to this morning:

calgary-may24.JPG

Two days ago I was mowing my lawn because it had grown so much the week before – and this morning I’m shovelling heavy, wet snow. If you look at the tree on the far right, you can see it’s bent – the snow was so heavy it bent all the trees and shrubs in our backyard in half. Only in Calgary…
