The It’s Rule

I found this amusing because it’s a mistake that, up until perhaps two years ago, I was making constantly. You’d think as a writer I’d know how to use the word, but my brain had a hard time grasping that this rule wasn’t related to the possessive. Isn’t English fun?

    As a kid growing up my mom used to dream of writing letters to companies in town that botched this on their signs. Polite letters from some sort of fake official sounding agency.

    There’s a store near me called Rick’s that sells various stoves, spas, and such. Their sign says:

    Rick’s Stoves Spa’s and Patios

    Go figure.
