Hisham,
It's my goal to read the books this year - for my birthday I'll ask for the set. ;-)

Do read the books - they'll give you even more insight into what a great job Peter Jackson did in adapting them. Although, personally, I was so pissed at the way they changed the character of Faramir that I still haven't gotten around to watching Return of the King.

Chris,
That's a really cool idea! Amazingly enough, I haven't read the books. I read The Hobbit when I was younger, but haven't ever gotten around to reading the LOTR series...

I'm doing something similar, albeit more drawn out. It has been nearly 20 years since I read the books, so I'm reading the books and watching the movies simultaneously. Basically, I'm reading about 1/4 of the book then watch the movie up to that point. It is really interesting to see the differences some really subtle, some not.
