WordPress Spell Check: Does This Thing Work At All?

I find myself a bit baffled by WordPress 2.1 at the moment. The spell check functionality doesn’t work at all for me. Look at the spelling of the word defaults below - “defults” - and the spell checker says there’s no problem. I don’t think this is an instance of Canadian vs. American spelling either. ;-) I did a bit of searching but can’t find anything about how/why the WordPress spell check feature would not work. Anyone have any ideas?

On my software the spell check won’t work until the server has the dictionary installed. Maybe WP is similar, do you use a Linux server? If Windows, I don’t know.

I use a Linux server, but I find it hard to believe there are extra, outside components that need to be added to WordPress before the dictionary will work…that would be incredibly silly of them. But that sure would explain a few things. ;-)

Huh, I’m getting “Could not execute AJAX call, server didn’t return valid a XML.” as an error message all the time when spell checking after in both Opera and Firefox. There’s something strange going on here… ;)

(Yes, I’m also running it on a Linux server, it is a bit trickier to get it running on a Windows server but not impossible.)

Good point about Live Writer - I have it installed but I keep forgetting to use it. I really have to get into the habit!

[...] “Humility is the beginning of wisdom” or something like that. At any rate, between the spell checker not working in WordPress 2.1 (and 2.1.1 for that matter) and the Firefox spell checker not working in the WordPress posting [...]
